Hot Tip for Getting Sand Out of a Child’s Hair

Removing sand from hair by vacuuming

Vacuum sand out of hair

Use a vacuum cleaner.

Seriously.

UPDATE: I do not recommend using this technique on children with long hair. Per our discussion in the comments I tried it on my own hair and the vacuum caused my hair to tangle very quickly. It worked beautifully on the boys’ short hair.

LOL That is so something I would do! hehe

    Is the sand required? :)

  2. AmyAug 28, 2008 - Link

Hi Jen! Nope, no sand required. Both boys thought it was hilarious and said it felt good. I think they liked the brush attachment on their hair.

  3. Doris M.Aug 28, 2008 - Link

That’s so cool that you tried the idea! I will remember to try that but do you think I should try it with a girl’s long hair???? Hmmm…. Great pictures… nice touch.

  4. MarySep 2, 2008 - Link

Hee hee! We used to do that when we were little. My husband actually does that every once in a while to the dog to get rid of some of the extra hair he sheds!

  5. AmySep 3, 2008 - Link

Doris, for you my friend I will attempt vacuuming of my own longish hair. Purely for scientific reasons of course. ;) I’ll let you know what I find out.

Mary I wish I would have thought of it years ago. I’ve shampooed little heads as many as 3 times in one bath, trying to raise the sand and grit away from scalps enough to rinse off. Those boys can really get dirty when they want to!

  6. LeeSep 10, 2008 - Link

You know, I never considered this and am both amused and impressed. When my daughter ws younger it was horrific getting the sand out – just terrible. Got to the point I preffered to take her to pools….

  7. Bogdan RaduSep 12, 2008 - Link

    haha. funny pictures, thank you!

  8. AmySep 14, 2008 - Link

Hi Lee, thanks for taking time to comment. :) Yea, I have struggled with getting sand out of hair for years as well. It was a conversation with Doris – and her offhand comment – that led to the vacuum trial.

Bogdan, glad to meet you as well. The boys have been enjoying some of my experiments. If nothing else, vacuuming a head is good for a giggle.

  9. DreadsNov 13, 2008 - Link

HAHA! Those pictures are classic! Why skip the vacuuming though and just give the kid some dread falls! No? O well, maybe next year.

  10. AmyNov 15, 2008 - Link

Dreads, thanks for visiting! I’m afraid I’m too lazy to do more than cut their hair short…and to be totally honest one of the grandmas does that for me. :)

  11. Ajith EdasseryDec 13, 2008 - Link

That was the most hilarious parenting tip I ever read but it works great. I came in here from Google searching for how to get the sand out of kids (my six year old brat) hair and found the most unconventional – but technically correct – way of using a vaccum cleaner.

My son has slightly curly hair but still it works :)

Thanks for the wonderful tip and I will make it a point to check out your site again,

    Ajith, Bangalore, India

    Ajith,

Glad you liked the tip! I discovered recently that the vacuum works very well on getting sand out of shoes too. Why does it take me so long to think of these things???

To be honest, I hate cleaning sand. I don’t have kids, but if I did and they came in sandy, I would consider not only vacuuming it out of their hair, but their clothes, shoes, and getting as much off of them as I could.
