FFYF: Uhh, Uhh, Edition

Happy Friday, Heroes! Today I bring you the brilliance of Captain Earthquake. See, the Captain doesn’t like to shop. And by “shop” I mean entering any store, even ones that stock frivolous items such as food. He’s always hated stores. I have no idea why. Thankfully, he has managed to improve his attitude to the point that it’s at least tolerable to buy groceries with him. I’ve done what I can to make it easier for him, but the bottom line is that there are days when I just HAVE to buy food. It’s unavoidable. Who knew??

Annnnyhow. We were entering a grocery store last week and he was walking along next to me saying “uhhhh” in a disgusted tone. I replied “Uhhhhh” back to him. He responded in kind. After several “uhhhhs” back and forth I asked, “Why are we saying Uhhhhhhh?”.

To which he responded, “Because this is uhhhhhh-noying.”

Ba-dum-bum. Even he couldn’t hide a smile when I cracked up.

FFYF: Frozen Bananas Edition

Last week we had a power outage here at Earnest Parenting, and Hubby bought some dry ice to help protect our freezer items. This prompted the boys to research all sorts of dry ice experiments, but when we opened the freezer to get a chunk out for play study, it was already all melted away. Hubby bought us another chunk and at dinner the other night, we had our very own dry ice centerpiece. To make it even more fun, TechnoBoy added a drop of liquid dish soap. Bubbles filled with the ‘smoke’ from dry ice are super fun!

After dinner, I was clearing the counter and noticed a bag with two bunches of bananas inside.

I emptied the bag and was putting the bananas away when I was horrified to see humongous black bruises on each bunch.

Why on earth would Hubby buy bananas in such obviously bad shape?? Then it hit me. Hubby had set the bananas on the dry ice in the car on the way home! The bag it was in wasn’t enough to insulate and the bananas froze and turned black on those spots. We had a good laugh, especially when I grabbed the camera and said, “I am so blogging this.”

Adolescent vs Parent: I Don’t Like the Win/Lose Thing

The Mercenary is well on his way to perfecting the adolescent sigh of irritation whenever I breathe. Yesterday I said to him “Hey, please take the sheets off your bed and bring them down to my room so I can wash them for you.”

His response was to roll his eyes, droop his shoulders and say in an irritated sigh: “Mom!!!”

Really? It’s annoying for him to perform a ten second task to help me complete a service for him??? He had gotten into some poison ivy recently, and I was concerned that his bedding may have some of the oil on it. Hence the desire to get it washed for him. But apparently my request of him was just too much, even though I made the request while I was in the kitchen preparing food. That he was going to eat.

Ahem.

Why is it that teens and pre-teens want to turn everything into a battle? Just because something is my idea doesn’t make it objectionable. Well. In my universe anyway. The boys appear to think differently.

A Short Pause Due To Technical Difficulties

Hello, friends! Due to a truly spectacular computer crash (new laptop has now decided that the version of Windows it came with is invalid) I do not have access to my email from the last 2 days. Not to worry, the problem is being worked on as I type and I hope to be up and running again soon. I’ve booted the boys off of the desktop computer and am typing as fast as I can before they finish their chores and come back.

Lord willing, the whole situation will be repaired and under control today. Or….we may need to return the silly thing and I’ll be out of a machine for a while. Either way, there are backups available and I’ll be doing my best to communicate with everyone. If you emailed and don’t get a response by tomorrow or Friday, write again. I’ll get access to my email another way.

In the meantime, while I’m waiting for virus scans to run and programs to cooperate, I’m going to drag the boys out to the garage and attempt to disassemble the lawn mower. Because why would it be any fun to only have one machine down around here?

FFYF: Bendy Knee Edition

Good Friday, Internets! Welcome to our Bendy Knee Edition of Fun For Your Friday. I say Bendy Knee because that’s exactly what I’ve been working on lately. Yup, the Knee that Will Not Bend is beginning to cooperate! I dodged a bullet this week when some medical professionals recommended that I undergo something called a “closed manipulation” wherein I am knocked out and the surgeon bends my knee for me. And then…THEN…they would put me into a special knee-bending machine for 8 hours a day. (Rumor has it people do this while sleeping.)

Ummmmmm, NO. Not doing that if I can avoid it. Thankyouverymuch.

So, I returned to therapy yesterday to discover that my knee is bending more and I have definitely been progressing. The plan is to continue on this path until I have full flexion, thus avoiding the horrible contraption I have dubbed the Knee Bendy Machine. And, I may not need surgery at all if the knee continues to be solid.

All reasons to smile on a Friday.
