Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

Howdy Heroes. I had a unique opportunity recently, to participate in an interview with actress Cynthia Nixon. You may have heard of her.

I’ve seen her on this show and that over the years, but had no idea that she suffers from rosacea. Boy did I ever learn a lot! 16 million Americans suffer from the condition, but 78% of people don’t even know what it is.

Rosacea is a vascular condition, meaning that it has to do with your circulatory system. You can’t just scrub it away as you would with acne. Rosacea is often mistaken for acne, but unfortunately acne treatments can make rosacea worse – for proper treatment and diagnosis, visit a dermatologist.

In fact, treating the skin severely actually can make rosacea worse.

Typically, the condition manifests in adulthood, so as parents we should be looking more at our own skin and not worrying as much about the kids. It can be affected by diet and stress, and if it’s not treated it can cause more trouble for the sufferer.

Cynthia talked about how she felt when her skin was red and breaking out, how she tried to use the acne products to solve the problem, and how she found out she had rosacea in the first place. She was seeing a dermatologist for another reason, and the doctor asked if she knew that’s what she had. If it weren’t for the conversation, her condition could have gone untreated for much longer.

If you think you may have rosacea, Cynthia wants you to know that help is available. There is a quick quiz you can take that will let you know what to look for and can possibly assess your risk factors (see below). Also, here’s a list of what we took away from the interview:

Here is What Cynthia Wants Rosacea Suffers To Know!

  • No one is picture perfect – not even celebrities – but everyone can get educated on skincare, especially if you suspect you have rosacea.
  • Rosacea is a vascular condition caused by inflammation, with symptoms that include facial redness, pimples, eye irritation and can even lead to thickened skin and permanent visible blood vessels.  If left untreated, rosacea can actually worsen over time.
  • While there is no cure for rosacea and the cause is unknown, it can be treated with the help of a dermatologist.
