Fact:

(Reference: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: National Findings.)

OVER 3 MILLION U.S. TEENS ABUSE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.
(Reference: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. 2007, National Survey on Drug Use and Health: National Findings.)

EVERY DAY, 3,300 MORE CHILDREN BEGIN EXPERIMENTING WITH PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.
(Reference: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. 2007a. A Day in the Life of American Adolescents: Substance Use Facts.)

Those are some scary facts.

We’ve had articles before about the importance of locking up prescription meds. One thing I think about a lot as the boys get more social is the danger of just having medications around that visitors might get into. My own parents had a locking cabinet in the wall of the bathroom, and I’ve often thought we might be wise to get something like that ourselves.

Just to be safe.

I was mighty interested when the creators of LOCKMED medication lock boxes contacted me to do a review of their product. I got the small medication lock box, and it is really handy. The box can hold up to 12 prescription bottles. It’s made of reinforced aluminum with a 3 digit combination lock on the front. Yes, if someone was particularly determined they could break into this box. It will, however, deter most casual attempts to steal.

It’s also handy for travel. I’m planning to donate this one to our Scout group so that the leaders can safeguard boys’ medications on overnight camping trips. There’s room for both the bottles and the necessary papers giving permission, etc. Very handy.

The LOCKMED medication lock boxes are available online at the main site, as well as at select stores nationwide.
