Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

Sara from The Fresh Air Fund contacted me last month to tell me about a wonderful gift given to children who participated in Fresh Air camps this past summer. OneSight brought a traveling optical clinic to the camps and made sure that over 3000 children who needed the gift of sight were screened. Is that cool or what?

Here are the statistics: This summer at Fresh Air camp, OneSight’s staff screened 3,295 children and counselors, gave 1,757 eye exams, and made 1,629 pairs of glasses, with 1,458 of them on-site and 171 specially driven in. The team stayed at Camp Hayden-Marks for two camp sessions, to make sure every child who needed the gift of sight was screened.

In case you’ve forgotten, The Fresh Air Fund is a non-profit organization that provides summer camp experiences for children from New York City. They’ve been doing this since 1877 (amazing!) for kids between the ages of 6 and 18.

Are you interested in being a host family for a child in 2010? Or perhaps you’d like to make a contribution to help the program. Both would be greatly appreciated, I’m sure.

For those of you who enjoy a good run: If you happen to be in the New York City area on March 21, 2010 you can help out the fund by joining the NYC Half-Marathon. 210 people have run to help The Fresh Air Fund over the past 3 years with fantastic results.
