I met Kristin King at SOBCon08 and had the chance to chat with her further last week at SOBCon09. She’s adorable! And, as it turns out, she has superpowers.
Really! No kidding! Just recently she saved a choking baby by using the Heimlich Maneuver. Here’s what she posted on FaceBook.
I Heimliched a choking baby yesterday. If you’re a parent, you MUST know the Heimlich maneuver, basic first aid, and CPR. Don’t wait.
Wow is Kristin ever right. Soooooo, do you have first aid training? When is the last time you took any kind of refresher course? It’s been quite a while for me. Fortunately the boys are learning first aid with Scouts so I can brush up with them.
I found a great resource online for first aid at the KidsHealth.org parent safety page. You can also watch some training videos at ProCPR.org. If you pay the fee, there’s a certification program to get your card. You may also be able to find local training classes if you contact the Red Cross or your local doctor or hospital.
Are you competent to deal with a medical emergency in your own home? The life you save could be related to you.

Great post! I know they teach you this before you leave home with the baby but most people are too overwhelmed to remember everything.
If nothing else learn how to deal with a choking child/infant. That usually is their cause of death and you can avoid needing to use the CPR part if you can stop the choking! (because in reality if you can’t clear the airway, you can’t do CPR anyway)
First aid is very important, imagine you saved a choking baby your good. Doing CPR is not that easy if you don’t know how to do it properly better not try.
Getting first aid training is a wonderful thing.
Thanks
Neo
Mary wow, that brings back an extremely vague memory. Until you said that I had forgotten that the nurses went over choking treatment when the boys were born. You’re right, it’s easily forgotten.
virtual office makati also a very good point. I hope that many people choose to get properly trained before they accidentally do any damage.
Neo agreed. Are you trained in first aid?
First aid is really important to any person. We must know the basics of it so that when something happen to you or to other people, we are prepared. Good thing that there are free trainings everywhere.
Thanks for the reminder that I’m not really trained in first aid! I really have to do another curse for that – ’cause it’s too important!!!
I think I should learn something about first-aid, I even do not know anything, but started to read already and will find and go some free course about that…
You are so right first aid training is soo important. Great referrals too.
things that you don’t expect could happen, one is the accidents.. it is very important to have a knowledge in first aiding, because there will be a time that you will need it.. you can save other lives through this..
Wow, good thing she knew how to do the Heimlich maneuver. I must admit, I have no first aid training at all! Ack! I wouldn’t know how to do CPR at all. Now this has me thinking, I really should get some training right? I’m sure it’ll come in handy. Thanks!
I would also like to add that health insurance is a must now. We do not know what the future holds. It is important that we give this kind of safety to our employees. In times of accident
