Encouraging Heroes. You can be one too.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in the US, and like so many of my blogging compatriots my thoughts are on the holiday and what it means. There are so many things to be thankful for: we have a house, warm clothes, family to love, and food to eat.

Believe me when I say that I deserve none of that with which I’ve been blessed.

Something else that I’m so very thankful for is the freedom that I enjoy as a US citizen. I credit the continuation of that freedom to our men and women in the armed forces who have sacrificed so much for all of us. Both my grandfather and my father-in-law fought in World War II, and we’re blessed that they returned relatively unscathed and went on to live full lives.

Not all soldiers return so easily. I was contacted recently by a group called Survivor Corps, which “works to break cycles of victimization and violence, individual by individual, country by country. At our core is a survivor-centered approach for victims of war to recover, rebuild their communities and change the world.”

In America, this translates to Operation Survivor, a program which helps soldiers re-integrate to their families and lives. Many come home with physical and mental wounds, and support is required. Operation Survivor is there to provide both online and peer support, as well as take a role in collaborating with other organizations to help soldiers as much as possible.

Please visit the Survivor Corps home page and see for yourself the important work they’re doing. As a nonprofit organization, they rely on donations to complete the mission. Do you have someone in your family that’s difficult to buy gifts for because they already have everything they need? How about a donation to a great organization like Survivor Corps in their name?

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Earnest Parenting: help for parents who want to show their thankfulness.

**Update: March, 2013. The Survivor Corps nonprofit has closed. Please support our soldiers via other charities. They deserve every bit.
